Garlic grows up to 2 to 3 feet.  It has long, flat leaves and white flowers.  Its bulb has many cloves that are papery white.

Hardneck garlic (Allium sativum ophioscorodon) produces fewer cloves than softneck, and is better suited to northern, cooler climates. Each plant produces a garlic scape, a central shoot with a flower atop it.

Hardneck garlic is usually grown by small farmers, and many claim that it has more robust flavor than softneck varieties. Although the precise taxonomy of garlic is somewhat muddy, hardneck varieties break down into five main types: Porcelain, Purple Stripe, Marbled Purple Stripe, Glazed Purple Stripe and Rocambole, and three varieties of weakly bolting hardnecks that often produce softnecks: Creole, Asiatic and Turban.

Softneck garlic (Allium sativum sativum) is grown in warmer climates. Most garlic in the supermarket is the softneck variety. Softneck garlic does not produce garlic scapes, and it produces more cloves than hardneck garlic.

Softneck garlic can be broken down into two varietal groups: Artichoke and Silverskin.

Cultivation :  

A major advantage of growing garlic at home is that this herb thrives well in varied climatic conditions. For example, you can grow them in indoors near a window or co-plant them with vegetables and other flowering plants. Thus, you get a wide range of options for garlic plantation.

Separate Cloves
Purchase healthy bulbs of garlic and separate each of the individual cloves. A single garlic clove develops as a plant and on maturity, produces a bulb. Based on the area size for plantation, you can estimate the number of garlic cloves and separate them accordingly.

Select the Plantation Site
For better formation of garlic bulbs, select a plantation site that receives a lot of sunlight. Also, make sure that the soil in that area is not so damp. Otherwise, there may be rotting of the garlic bulbs during cold winter months.

Prepare Soil
Preparation of soil for growing garlic should be done in autumn. Spring plantation is also possible for warmer climates. So, based on the prevailing climatic conditions in your area, you can prepare soil either in spring or autumn. If your garden is wet, consider supplementing it with sand and organic matter to make it porous.

Plant Garlic Cloves
While planting garlic, dig the soil to about an inch deep, insert the clove and cover it with soil. If you are planting garlic in a vegetable garden, then maintain a gap of about 4 inch between each plant and a row spacing of approximately 18 inches. This allows easy watering of the garlic plants and weeding (if necessary).

Water Garlic Plants
Water the newly planted garlic cloves adequately for quick formation of the leaves. When you notice a green shoot development, reduce the irrigation frequency and allow the soil to dry in between two watering sessions, or else water only when the top soil is dry.

Garlic Plant Care
For a good harvest, consider fertilizing the plants with a general purpose fertilizer in late March and May. Ensure that you keep a watch over the invading weeds. Mulching with hay or straw is a good way to control weeds. Depending upon the variety, garlic matures in about 7-8 months after plantation.

Harvest Garlic
Timely harvesting is a crucial garlic growing tip. Harvesting it too early produces small-sized bulbs, while late harvesting induces splitting of the bulbs. So, either way, you will get poor quality garlic bulbs. The right time for harvesting garlic is when most of the leaves wither and turn yellow. While harvesting, loosen the soil with the help of a trowel and gently ease the garlic bulbs.

People who do not have a garden can grow garlic in pots. The information on how to grow garlic in containers and pots is the same as that of planting it in garden soil. Maintain the same spacing between two garlic plants (4 inch) and follow the same tips as above. Benefits of Garlic

Heart disease

Some evidence suggests that garlic may help prevent heart disease. It may slow down atherosclerosis (hardening of the arteries) and lower blood pressure slightly, between 7% and 8%. Most of the studies on high blood pressure have used a specific formulation called Kwai. One study that lasted 4 years found that people who took 900 mg daily of standardized garlic powder slowed the development of atherosclerosis. Garlic also seems to be an anticoagulant, meaning it acts as a blood-thinner, which may help prevent heart attacks and strokes.

Earlier studies found that garlic lowered high cholesterol, but more recent studies that are high quality have found no effect.

Common cold

Some early evidence suggests garlic may help prevent colds. In one study, people took either garlic supplements or placebo for 12 weeks during "cold season" between November and February. Those who took garlic had fewer colds than those who took placebo. Plus, when they did get a cold, the people taking garlic saw their symptoms go away faster than those who took placebo.


Garlic may strengthen the immune system, helping the body fight diseases such as cancer. In test tubes, garlic seems to have anti-cancer activity. And population studies -- ones that follow groups of people over time -- suggest that people who eat more raw or cooked garlic are less likely to develop certain types of cancer, particularly colon and stomach cancers. In fact, researchers who reviewed 7 studies found a 30% reduction in risk of colorectal cancer among people who ate a lot of raw or cooked garlic. Garlic supplements don' t seem to have the same effect.

  • A large-scale study, called the Iowa Women's Health Study, looked at how much garlic, fruit, and vegetables were in the diets of 41,000 middle-aged women. Results showed that women who regularly ate garlic, fruits, and vegetables had a 35% lower risk of developing colon cancer.
  • Garlic may help the immune system function better during times of need such as in cancer. In a study of 50 people with inoperable colorectal, liver, or pancreatic cancer, immune activity improved after they took aged garlic extract for 6 months.
